Housing Counselors play a prominent role assisting consumers in becoming successful homeowners by helping clients recognize their rights and responsibilities. The knowledge required to educate potential buyers includes reviewing credit, sensible budgeting, understanding the lending process, house hunting, and an understanding of today’s volatile housing market. Although in this current economic environment mortgage interest rates are at a favorable rate, consumers still find it difficult to locate affordable housing units. The housing market is still tight as inventories are low and prices are high, which puts affordability out of reach. The demand for rentals is still high, driving up rent cost. How can a consumer make a good decision on which is more affordable…owning or renting? Today’s housing counselors must keep abreast of the market and the tools, resources, and training necessary to educate clients about homeownership and housing affordability.
